Everything there is done by friendship and favour, and while this is a delightful and primitive way of doing business, there are times when it is frustrating. It is then that one discovers the French people are not, as is generally believed, exclusively interested in money, and that their real passion, as an essentially feminine people, is to confer favours, to indulge their egoism and feeling of superiority to the rest of the world by acts of condescension and grace."
