It took a nice girl from Philadelphia to write a book about naughty Paris and not be embarrassed if her father read it. If you are looking for salacious, NAUGHTY PARIS is not the place for you, but if you are looking for elegant naughtiness-to access your inner French lover, then NAUGHTY PARIS is written for you. Where to have that romantic tète-a tète; where to find the sexiest lingerie; and most importantly how to appreciate the flirtations that make quotidian life in Paris so pleasurable.

TG: When did you first go (come) to Paris?
HSH: I arrived in 1995 for my Junior Year Abroad, and studied at the University of Paris 2 – Assas.

TG: When and why did you come back to stay?
HSH: I went back to Minnesota (Carleton College) in 1996 to finish my last year of college, then returned to Paris after graduating in 1997 “just for the summer.” I was just going to hang out for a few months with friends, but ended up finding a job bartending, then marrying a British man, then getting my ten-year carte de séjour…it all goes by very fast!

TG: Where do you live (arrondissement?
HSH: I live in the 13th, on the Avenue des Gobelins.

TG: Why?
HSH: I’ve lived everywhere in Paris, even the ‘burbs, but this is the only place where I’ve stayed longer than a year (almost four years here). I like the wide sidewalks to walk my dogs, the convenience of the three metro lines and many bus lines, lots of shops, bakeries, cafés, the Butte aux Cailles, Chinatown and Mouffetard market nearby, and the police station right next door so I feel safe at night. It’s also affordable, and there are very few tourists, so I can relax a bit from my “work” life. ;)

TG: What’s your favorite café?
HSH: Ladurée–all of them.

TG: What’s your favorite bistro du coin?
HSH: Vin des Pyrénées, in the St Paul district.

TG: What’s your favorite restaurant for a naughty dinner or a prelude to a naughty night?

HSH: L’Hotel or Black Calavados.

TG: What are the most significant differences between French and American women?

HSH: American women seem to work on looking “perfect”, whereas French women (even though they work hard to look “good”) seem to work on being more interesting (individual character, intelligence, culture, etc.)

TG: What motivated you to write and self-publish NAUGHTY PARIS?

HSH: Not only have I been writing regular guidebooks and travel articles for over 8 years, I also have a website about Paris called Secrets of Paris. I started getting emails from readers asking for information about where to find couples’ clubs or how to plan a sexy honeymoon, and I thought “strange that no one has written a guide for that in English”.

About three years ago I finally decided to start writing it, but just for women, since I didn’t really want to research anything for men like how to pick up prostitutes. I wanted to do a nice, tasteful guide for ladies. Et voila.

TG: What is your greatest fulfilled naughty fantasy?

HSH: A lady doesn’t share that information, sorry. The book is not about me and my personal experiences; I researched and wrote it as a journalist.

TG: How has Paris affected your work?

HSH: Not sure how to judge this, since I’ve lived here since being a student, therefore ALL of my work has been in Paris, and without my Paris guides and Paris tours, I wouldn’t have work at all! I’ve pretty much made Paris the center of my life in every way.

TG: How has Paris affected your life?

HSH: It has taught me patience and has helped me to slow down and enjoy the most important things in life: good friends, good food, and an appreciation for all things beautiful.
